Bipolar disorder and the elderly
GM, 37, October, 2007
Elderly patients with bipolar disorder can present some of the most diffi cult management
challenges for old age psychiatrists. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
guidelines on bipolar disorder contain few references to the management of this condition in the
elderly. In the second of this two part series, Drs Charlotte O’Callaghan, Biswadeep Majumdar
and Anna Richman discuss acute depression management and long-term prophylaxis.
