Clostridium difficile: impact and management

Clostridium diffi cile infection is recognised as a frequent cause of antibiotic-associated
diarrhoea and antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis in patients admitted to hospitals
in the UK. In recent years, the incidence of this disease is on the rise despite all measures and
policy in place to curtail the outbreak. Dr James Alegbeleye reviews the epidemiology, impact
and the management options of this infection.
