Why are older people excluded from clinical research?
GM, 36, April, 2006
There is a dearth of clinical research in the very subgroup of the population who use the
bulk of health services. This is despite almost 80 per cent of older people indicating an
intention to take part in a clinical treatment trial if they developed a serious illness. In this
article, Dr Deepa Sumukadas and Professor Marion McMurdo discuss the reasons why older
people are under-represented in clinical trials.
